We are so glad you have come to hear a little more about our congregation. We'd love to have you join us each Saturday evening at 5pm!
We know that most people feel uncomfortable visiting a church for the first time, especially when you may not know anyone or what to expect. At Norborne UMC, we want you to feel comfortable so that you will experience the presence and power of God in the music we offer, and the Word of God that we hear. Here are are some questions to some commonly asked questions we get about our church:
Q.What time is worship?
A. 5:00pm each Saturday evening.
Q. Why do you worship on Saturday evenings?
A. In January 2011, we moved to worshipping from Sunday mornings to Saturday evenings to best suit the needs of our worshipping community. Some members with health concerns reported that the new service time allowed them more time to prepare to come to worship. The time also works better for Pastor Michael, as he preaches at two other churches on Sunday mornings.
Q.What will happen during worship?
A. Our worship is more "traditional"- meaning we sing from hymnals and read prayers together from the worship bulletin that you will receive from a greeter when you enter. We listen to scripture and a sermon, usually about 20 minutes long, from our pastor. We have a screen that displays the words to all the hymns, scriptures, and readings. Worship lasts right about an hour.
Q. How do I dress?
A. Most folks in our congregation come to worship dressed comfortably; and feel right at home here in their ordinary, everyday clothes.
Q.Will my children be welcome in worship?
A. Of course! We believe that God speaks to all of us, adults and children alike, and children are images of the presence of God around us. Please feel free to grab a Praise Pack, with crayons and coloring pages to work on during worship. Children will be invited to come have a moment with the Pastor during the worship service, as well.
Q. Do you collect an offering?
A. Some would say that good Methodists have to take an offering when we gather. We indeed do take
an offering at most worship services at Norborne UMC, as a way to remind ourselves that God calls us into service. Of course, as our guest, you are not expected to contribute, because baptized members of the church have vowed to support the ministries of our congregation with our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. We know that God will speak to you about giving in the appropriate time. Worship offerings support local and world ministries, and our weekly operating costs.
Q. What is Communion?
A. Once a month we celebrate Holy Communion, where we eat bread dipped in grape juice to remind us of the body and blood that Jesus shed for us. In eating the bread, we take on the call to give of ourselves, as well. We hope you will feel comfortable joining right in; but we also do not mind if you would just like to observe. We will not embarrass you by asking you to participate in anything you do not want to do.
